My old man only ever had one tattoo—a fiery steed with a horn, or in layman’s terms, a unicorn. He got it in the late 70s, in a Brooklyn basement during a time when tattooing was illegal in NYC. Over the decades, the tattoo has weathered alongside him—and me—fading and blurring until it’s almost unrecognizable. Even up close, I struggle to make heads or tails of what it once was.

Driven by the urgency of realizing “all is impermanent”, I embarked on an obsessive journey to capture the essence of the single most important tattoo in my life: researching tattoo flash from that era, talking to tattoo artists, channeling childhood memories, feeding my own sketches into AI image searches, and drawing no less than a hundred unicorns until it finally felt like I had it right.
